How to Succeed in School

Whether you're a high school student or a college student, juggling school work with your family, your job, and social obligations can be challenging. Having a plan for handling school work is essential for doing well in your classes.

One of the best ways to do well in a class is to keep up with the reading and homework assignments. This ensures that you are not going over the material for the first time when you are studying for a test and will make your life a lot easier. It can be difficult to keep up with assignments, but it is worthwhile to not have to cram before tests or finals.

If you are allowed to write in your textbooks, highlight important sentences or phrases when you are reading the material. This way you will not have to read the chapter again when you are studying for a test. You will only have to read the highlighted sentences or phrases when studying.

In the classroom, try to take good notes. Many teachers will ask questions on material that is not in the book, but was covered in the lecture. If you missed any classes, try to get notes from a friend. If you do not know anyone in the class, try contacting the teacher to find out what was covered in that particular class.

When you have a test approaching, it's a good idea to take the week before and break up the material into manageable amounts to study each day. An hour or two each day for a week should have you very comfortable with the material by the time you have your test. This should also avoid trying to cram the material the night before the test. Another helpful idea for studying is to have a friend or family member quiz you.

If you are really struggling with the work load, consider getting a tutor. Many colleges and high schools offer tutoring programs, and they do not cost anything. If your school does not have a tutoring program, you can hire a tutor. Another idea is to ask the teacher for an extra credit assignment. If you do need extra credit or a tutor, do not wait until a week before the final exam because you are probably too far behind to catch up.

These tips will help you stay on top of your school work, and also leave you time for other priorities in your life.
