Tomorrow, researchers from CERN will be releasing experiment results that suggest neutrinos, the lightest particles we're aware of, may be moving slightly faster than the speed of light. Neutrinos have generally made the news because they engage in what are called flavor oscillations, in which (to give one example) an experiment that creates only muon neutrinos will see some of them behave as electron neutrinos when they hit a detector. "MINOS also measured a faster-than-light value of the neutrino speed," MINOS co-spokesperson Jenny Thomas told Ars, "but the errors were so big we dismissed it." Errors in any one of these factors can introduce errors into the results. CERN has a similar, higher-energy version of the Fermi experiment called OPERA, which sends neutrinos from a source in Switzerland to a detector at Gran Sasso in Italy. Neutrinos from supernovae are relatively low energy; MINOS' were much higher, at which point a weak effect turned up. The physics world is abuzz with news that a group of European physicists plans to announce Friday that it has clocked a burst of subatomic particles known as neutrinos breaking the cosmic speed limit - the speed of light - that was set by Albert Einstein in 1905. If true, it is a result that would change the world. But that "if" is enormous. Incredible claims require incredible evidence. "These guys have done their level best, but before throwing Einstein on the bonfire, you would like to see an independent experiment," said John Ellis, a CERN theorist who has published work on the speeds of the ghostly particles known as neutrinos. According to scientists familiar with the paper, the neutrinos raced from a particle accelerator at CERN outside Geneva, where they were created, to a cavern underneath Gran Sasso in Italy, a distance of about 450 miles, about 60 nanoseconds faster than it would take a light beam. Einstein himself - the author of modern physics, whose theory of relativity established the speed of light as the ultimate limit - said that if you could send a message faster than light, "You could send a telegram to the past." The group that is reporting the results is known as OPERA, for Oscillation Project with Emulsion-Tracking Apparatus. Antonio Ereditato, the physicist at the University of Bern who leads the group, agreed with de Rejula and others who expressed shock. Neutrinos are among the weirdest denizens of the weird quantum subatomic world. de Rujula pointed out however, that it was impossible to identify which protons gave birth to which neutrino, leading to statistical uncertainties. That group found, though with less precision, that the neutrino speeds were consistent with the speed of light. “This result comes as a complete surprise,” said OPERA spokesperson, Antonio Ereditato of the University of Bern. While OPERA researchers will continue their studies, we are also looking forward to independent measurements to fully assess the nature of this observation.” To get the job done, the OPERA Collaboration joined forces with CERN metrology experts and other facilities to establish absolute calibrations. There cannot be any error margin in parameters between the source and detector distances – and the neutrino’s flight time. In this circumstance, the measurements of the initial source of the neutrino beam and OPERA has an uncertainty value of 20 cm over the 730 km. “Today’s seminar is intended to invite scrutiny from the broader particle physics community.”

The recent frenzy of passive gadget consumers and IT professionals who rushed to purchase the HP TouchPad during a massive fire sale, has opened the door for security research and planning, eEye Digital Security’s CTO Marc Maiffret said.
When word of HP’s horrible earnings announcement spread, the secondary story was that they were scrapping their tablet computer division. The 32GB models are full retail as well. “I recently watched IT administrator mailing lists buzzing with conversations about where everyone could buy an HP TouchPad - with the almost free price, now that HP has discontinued the product,” Maiffret commented on the eEye blog.
“HP is offering a tablet that you can be sure is hooking up to corporate email and accessing corporate documents. When I see people rushing to buy TouchPads and put the security of that into context, I think this is a great time to discover vulnerabilities that could compromise TouchPads.”
“It already takes companies like Microsoft and Oracle extremely long periods of time to fix vulnerabilities in their software. “Cases like this go beyond the security implications of thousands of new TouchPad devices potentially putting corporate information at risk.
Apple’s legal team surely saw the TouchPad as being every the actionable iPad ripoff that the Tab was, and yet unlike Apple’s protracted worldwide patent enforcement action against Samsung, Apple didn’t bother to lift a finger against Hewlett Packard in order to send the TouchPad packing from the market. Perhaps Apple is solely interested in using a scorched earth legal strategy against Android based tablets, after what it considers a betrayal on the part of Android OS maker Google. Contrast that with the HP TouchPad, which runs webOS, which you’ve never heard of unless you come from deep inside the geek inner circle (it was originally designed for the Palm Pre smartphone, which almost no one bought).
Apple could have filed emergency injunctions to block the TouchPad launch in advance, but as far as it known, that never happened. When HP acquired Palm, Jon Rubinstein came with it. Before that Rubinstein was an engineering exec at Apple, where he was part of an overwhelmingly successful run of products. But it was Steve Jobs who was dictating the vision for Apple’s products. Rubinstein was one of those geeks.

HP's fire sale on the TouchPad tablet computer has exhausted inventories for good in Canada , while the U.S. is still waiting for the next shipments, but the company said on Monday consumers shouldn't hold their breath.
The fire sale marked the "lowest price ever" for the tablet, with 16GB versions dropping to $99 and $149 for 32GB. Despite multiple price drops and plenty of hype, the tablet suffered from tepid reviews and a lacking software ecosystem.
"Yesterday we announced that we will focus on the future of webOS as a software platform but we will no longer be producing webOS devices," said HP's global developer relations SVP, Richard Kerris. It would also mean webOS based smartphones and tablets would never see an upgrade.
While HP still sees a future for the webOS and its associated apps, its unclear what that future will exactly be.

Info For UFC 132

Last week’s event in Las Vegas proved to be one of the most exciting events in a long time.
There were contrasting emotions for two of the legends of the sport as Tito Otiz lives to fight another day while the same cannot be said for Wanderlei Silva after his devastating defeat to Chris Leben.
The fact that it took only 27 seconds for Chris Leben to possibly consign Wanderlei Silva’s UFC career to the history books is a bitter pill to swallow for fans of the “Axe Murderer.”
Silva seemed to connect first before being caught himself and as he looked to the safety of his Muay Thai clinch, Leben caught him with two or three vicous uppercuts that sent Silva to the canvas as “The Crippler” swarmed all over him to finish the fight early in the first round.
One fighter who jump-started his ailing career last Saturday night was Tito Ortiz.
This past weekend's UFC 132 event officially drew 13,109 attendees for a $2,304,500 live gate.

The MGM Grand Garden Arena's all-time top UFC gates, include:
UFC 66 (Liddell vs. Ortiz II): $5,397,300 gate (13,761 attendance)
UFC 91 (Couture vs. Lesnar): $4,815,675 (14,272)
UFC 71 (Liddell vs. Jackson): $4,304,000 (14,728)
UFC 116 (Lesnar vs. Carwin): $4,053,990 (12,740)
Upon losing the title and working his way back to a title shot against Mike Brown and then Jose Aldo, Faber moved down to bantamweight.
In the first fight of his Ultimate Fighting Championship era, he defeated Eddie Wineland, setting up a grudge match for the first ever UFC Bantamweight Title defense.
Prior to the fight, Cruz said he didn't think Faber had evolved since they first fought at WEC 26.
Bowles getting the next crack at Cruz leaves Faber to get Demetrious Johnson . Most recently, he defeated the former title holder, Miguel Angel Torres.
Jeff Hougland is sure glad he didn't tap out to a career in MMA.

After winning his first professional fight, he lost four in a row. Hougland (10-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC), a bantamweight, nearly finished his first UFC opponent, Donny Walker (15-7 MMA 0-1 UFC), on several occasions at UFC 132 using a submission, which to him is proof positive of how far he's come. "I wanted to jump off a building," Hougland told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) of his early-career losing streak. "But I didn't know jiu jitsu at all. "The cameraman told me I won."

Now, Hougland isn't choosy about whom he faces next. He's more interested in getting a full training camp in for his next fight.

"I got the minimum (medical) suspension," Hougland said.

spinner shark Jumps Over Surfer

The video seems to show a 4-foot black tip or spinner shark leaping out of the water over the unidentified surfer.
But experts note a shark jumping out of the water is not uncommon, just that is was captured on video.
McNair has been surfing in the New Smyrna Beach area for 46 years, and a few years ago he captured three pictures of a shark jumping next to a surfer.
Scientists say it's likely the shark was feeding on fish when it jumped out of the water, but Eric Hovland laughs at those who think it was going after the surfer.
A 4-foot spinner shark was caught on a video while jumping over a surfer at New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
Jacob Langston, Orlando Sentinel cameraman, while filming a story about surfing at New Smyrna Beach caught the jumping shark in his camera.
The shark was not so dangerous because it was not a great white shark. This particular breed of spinner sharks feeds on small fish, as their teeth are made for munching small fish.
sharks are always around the lineup
"Aren't you afraid of sharks when you are surfing?"
Shark encounters are common on the Treasure Coast and I've had some close calls over the years, as have plenty of other surfers I've talked with.
Anything shark-related tends to make headlines these days so I thought I'd clear up a few things about the recent incident where a spinner shark jumped over a surfer who was paddling for a wave at the New Smyrna Beach. (Visit youtube.com/watch?v=w9Qlyhh5_9o to watch).
For starters, spinner sharks cruise through lineups quite frequently and like to jump when chasing baitfish. Spinner sharks also enjoy warm water and migrate through the Treasure Coast in large numbers twice a year — once in the fall when water temperatures are too cold in New Smyrna Beach and again during the spring when water temperatures are too hot in South Florida.
The easiest way to tell if a shark is nearby is the way baitfish act. Be careful of murky water. Sharks rely heavily on their sense of smell and less on their eyesight so if a feeding frenzy breaks out in murky water the chances of being bitten can increase.
Sharks are nocturnal and mostly feed at night so surfing at dusk or dawn also increases the chances of an encounter.
Never surf alone. Spinners in the lineup. Spinner sharks don't always jump in the lineup and sometimes they're a few hundred yards offshore. Pay attention to where they're jumping and surf with caution.

Asteroid Past between the moon and earth later this year

Asteroid Past between the moon and earth later this year

The third near-earth asteroid of 2011 will pass between the moon and earth later this year, NASA has confirmed. The 400-metre wide asteroid, named 2005 YU55, will pass within 0.85 lunar distances of the Earth on November 8, 2011.
According to NASA’s Neart Earth Object Program: “Although classified as a potentially hazardous object, 2005 YU55 poses no threat of an Earth collision over at least the next 100 years. 2011MD, a newly discovered asteroid passed within 12,000 kilometres (7,500 miles) of Earth. The asteroid was only sighted for the first time on 22 June by a robotic telescope in New Mexico, USA. Some media outlets proclaimed the asteroid to be as big as New York’s Empire State Building’. According to Minor Planet Center’s ranking charts 2011 MD’s trip was the fifth-closest recorded Asteroid event. The last asteroid to impact earth was ‘2008 TC3’ which was detected on 7 October 2008, just 19 hours before it burned up in the atmosphere over northern Sudan.
Asteroid 2009 BD, which was first observed on 16 January 2009 passed approximately within 0.9 lunar distances (the distance between Earth and the Moon) of earth. Two asteroids, several meters in diameter and in unrelated orbits, passed within the moon’s distance of Earth, September 8 2010. In April 2010 an asteroid roughly as long as a tennis court zoomed past Earth at about the distance of the moon. The space rock to pass at or within lunar distance previous to this was 2009 JL2, an asteroid about 17 to 37 meters across, in May 2009.
There is a roughly 50 percent chance of a 30-meter-plus asteroid striking Earth each century, according to Clark Chapman, a space scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, USA.
The 2011 MD asteroid zoomed passed Earth Monday afternoon at a safe, 7,600-mile distance.
"Updated orbital calculations show 2011 MD will safely pass Earth June 27 1701UTC/1:01pmET, 7,600 miles above Earth's surface," NASA tweeted yesterday, later confirming the fly-by.
NASA said the probability of a near-Earth object (NEO) like 2011 MD actually striking our planet is "essentially zero."
In other asteroid news, NASA's Dawn spacecraft will soon begin the first extended visit to a large asteroid.

Even smaller countries like Sweden are in grave danger because of the damage to their infrastructure.

The list has been compiled using software called called NEOimpactor, short for NASA's 'NEO' or Near Earth Object programme.

Those countries which face massive devastation to their infrastructure are Canada, the US, China, Japan and Sweden.

The countries most at risk:

China

Indonesia

India

Japan

US

The Philippines

Italy

Britain

Brazil

Nigeria
